Pittsburgh, PA --   Pittsburgh Community Television (PCTV) will host the Fifth Annual Greater Pittsburgh Community Media Awards on October 20th from 7-8 pm.  The evening is a celebration of community media producers at PCTV, Moon Community Access (MCA), City Channel Pittsburgh (CCP), Monroeville Municipal Television (MMT) and Bethel Park Public Access (BPTV).  Join us as we celebrate the spirit of community media with an awards ceremony. The event is sponsored by SSB Bank. WTAE TV personality Andrew Stockey will be our guest MC for the evening.  This year’s event will be virtual and will be simulcast on TV, the web, and Apple TV, ROKU, and Fire TV.

The awards event will honor the unsung heroes of community media who educate, inspire, and enlighten area audiences.  The awardees are some of the finest local community media producers in the area.  Each awardee is dedicated to the noncommercial use of media for the public good.  The ceremony will honor the spirit and principles of community media including free speech, localism and equal access.

For the first time we are honoring producers of other types of community media, including community radio, community journalism, and podcasting.  The winners this year are Saturday Light Brigade and SLB Radio Productions for Community Radio,  The Almanac - South Hills Community News for Community Journalism, and Ghoul on Ghoul - Amanda Waltz & Sarah Cadence Hamm for Podcasting.

The participating organizations have a combined record of over 140 years of service to the community.  PCTV, MCA, and BPTV are all community media centers that provide training and access to community media production facilities and equipment.  CCP and MMT are government media centers that provide vital information about the decisions and positions of our elected officials.  The programs produced by the community and government operations are cablecast on local channels and distributed on-line through YouTube and other platforms.

The event will be virtual this year and will be free to watch on PCTV Comcast 21 and Verizon 47, MCA-TV Comcast 14 and Verizon 35, BPTV Comcast 7 and Verizon 32, PCTV’s website at: https://www.pctv21.org, and Apple TV, ROKU, and Fire TV on the PCTV app.  You can even watch on your iPhone using the Pittsburgh Community Television app.

In addition to the nominees listed below, three special awards for dedication will be given out.  PCTV will honor Ed Skirtich with the Howard Weaver Award, named after longtime PCTV community producer Howard Weaver, who died in 2021.  City Channel Pittsburgh will recognize Alexander Fisher with a Distinguished Service Award, and BPTV will recognize Anthony Veltri with an Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.
